Agreement/Spring Lake, Flood Risk Reduction
body
REQUESTED MOTION:
To approve the Agreement between the Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) and DeSoto County to conduct Phase I (Engineering and Design) of the Spring Lake drainage ditch.
SUMMARY:
The Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) Mitigation Bureau, Hazard Mitigation Grant Program, has awarded DeSoto County funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for the Engineering and Design of the Spring Lake drainage ditch.
BACKGROUND:
DeSoto County has undertaken multiple studies over the years to address recurring flooding impacts within the Deep Creek Gully watershed and along the associated drainage ditch corridor. Previous evaluations completed in 2001, 2009, and 2010 for the Southwest Florida Water Management District analyzed watershed conditions and floodplain concerns. Building on those efforts, updated survey data and stormwater modeling were completed to focus specifically on the drainage ditch from CR 769 to Deep Creek and the impacts to nearby residents. The detailed analysis identified several bridges, culvert crossings, ditch crossings, and areas where sediment, vegetation, and man-made obstructions are restricting water flow. Due to environmental constraints, wetlands, and permitting requirements, no single solution exists to fully eliminate flooding; however, targeted improvements are expected to reduce flood elevations and shorten the duration of flood events in the affected community.
