Resolution/Opioid Litigation Settlements

body

REQUESTED MOTION:

To authorize the County Administrator to Execute Participation and Release forms and related documents for current and future opioid litigation settlements.

SUMMARY:

This resolution authorizes the DeSoto County Administrator to execute all necessary participation and release forms required for the County to take part in current and future opioid litigation settlements. It ensures the County can access available settlement funds and continue participating in statewide efforts to address the opioid crisis.

BACKGROUND:

The State of Florida and numerous local governments initiated legal action against pharmaceutical manufacturers and distributors involved in the opioid crisis. A statewide agreement, known as the Florida Memorandum of Understanding, was established to guide how settlement funds stemming from said litigation are distributed and used. DeSoto County previously agreed to participate in this plan in 2021. As additional settlements are reached, participating entities must complete specific documentation to facilitate the disbursement of funds. This resolution streamlines that process by granting the County Administrator authority to execute required documents, ensuring timely participation and maximizing available funding for opioid abatement efforts.
